How are metal chairs made?
If you have ever wondered how metal chairs are made, the answer lies in roughly ten stages that turn raw steel tube into a packed, ready-to-ship product. As a chair manufacturer producing chairs, armchairs and bar stools in our own facility in Sancaktepe, Istanbul, we outline the chair manufacturing process here in plain terms for buyers and project owners. Knowing the steps helps you see which details actually define quality when you compare quotes.
Building the frame: cutting, bending and welding
Production starts with cutting steel profiles or tubes to length. Accurate cutting ensures every part fits precisely in the later stages. The tubes are then shaped on bending machines into legs, backrests and arms. During bending the tube must not collapse or lose its cross-section, which matters for both appearance and strength.
Bent parts are placed in welding jigs and joined together. Jigs keep every chair dimensionally identical and make sure all four legs sit flat on the floor. Wire designs involve many more weld points, so workmanship and inspection become even more important.
Grinding and surface finishing
Weld seams are ground smooth, burrs are removed and sharp edges are softened. This step is about both looks and safety: a poorly ground weld still shows through the paint and can snag fabric or hurt a user.
Sandblasting, pretreatment and powder coating
A long-lasting finish depends on surface preparation. The frame is cleaned of oil, rust and dirt by sandblasting or chemical pretreatment. Powder is then sprayed with an electrostatic gun; the charged particles cling evenly to the metal. The frame goes into a curing oven, where the powder melts and hardens into a tough, impact-resistant coating. Custom RAL colours for projects are applied at this stage.
Upholstery, quality control and packing
On upholstered models, seats and backs are covered with foam and fabric and fixed to the frame, with custom fabrics available for projects. Each chair is then checked for dimensions, stability, weld strength, coating and upholstery work. Floor glides are fitted and the chairs are packed to avoid scratches in transit, ready for delivery across Turkey or for export.
| Stage | Purpose | Effect on quality |
|---|---|---|
| Tube cutting | Parts to size | Assembly accuracy |
| Bending | Create the form | Looks and strength |
| Welding | Join the parts | Load capacity |
| Grinding | Smooth the seams | Safety and finish |
| Sandblasting / pretreatment | Clean the surface | Coating adhesion |
| Powder coating and curing | Protective layer | Rust and scratch resistance |
| Upholstery | Comfort | Seating quality |
| Inspection and packing | Fault-free delivery | Damage-free shipping |
What to check when buying from a manufacturer
- Inspect tube thickness and weld quality on a sample.
- Ask what surface preparation is done before coating.
- Confirm the powder type suits indoor or outdoor use.
- Agree lead times and order terms directly with the manufacturer.

Common questions
How many stages are there in metal chair manufacturing?
Typically ten: cutting, bending, welding, grinding, sandblasting or pretreatment, powder coating, curing, upholstery, quality control and packing.
Why are chair frames sandblasted before coating?
Sandblasting or chemical pretreatment removes oil, rust and dirt so the powder bonds firmly to the steel and the finish lasts longer.
Can I choose the frame colour and fabric?
Yes, custom powder coat colours and fabrics can be applied for projects. Request a quote from the manufacturer with your preferences.
