Metal vs Wood vs Upholstered Chairs for Restaurants and Cafés

In shortFor busy venues, metal chairs are the most durable and easiest to clean; wood looks warm but needs upkeep, and upholstered chairs are the most comfortable. For most restaurants and cafés, a metal frame with an upholstered seat is the best balance.

Quick comparison

In cafés, restaurants and hotels, the chair material you choose determines durability, cleaning time, comfort and long-term cost. The table below compares the three main options using typical values.

Metal chairs: tough and practical

Steel-framed chairs are among the longest-lasting options for commercial use. They are typically made from steel tube with a 1.5–2 mm wall, and welded joints do not loosen over time the way screwed or glued wooden joints can. A powder-coated finish wipes clean with a damp cloth and stands up to grease, coffee and detergents. Many models stack, which speeds up floor cleaning after closing and makes storage easy in event spaces. The downside is that a bare metal seat can feel hard during long meals, which an upholstered seat pad or cushion easily solves.

Wooden chairs: warm look, regular upkeep

Wood creates a warm, natural atmosphere in bistros and traditional restaurants. Under heavy use, however, joints can work loose, varnish scratches and wears, and the material reacts to changes in humidity. Expect periodic tightening and refinishing. Solid wood chairs rarely stack and, apart from special species such as teak, are not recommended outdoors.

Upholstered chairs: comfort and fabric choice

For fine-dining rooms, hotel lobbies and meeting spaces where guests stay longer, upholstered chairs offer the highest comfort. For commercial use, look for:

  • Seat foam 5–8 cm thick with a density of 28–35 kg/m³.
  • Fabric rated at least 30,000 Martindale rubs, or 50,000 for very heavy use.
  • Wipe-clean fabric or faux leather in areas with a high risk of spills.

Fabric and foam wear over time, but as long as the frame stays sound, the chair can be reupholstered and kept in service for many years.

Outdoor use and lifetime cost

On terraces and in gardens, metal chairs with an outdoor-grade coating are the clear choice; wood and standard upholstery deteriorate quickly in sun and rain. When comparing cost, look beyond the purchase price to maintenance, repairs, replacement cycles and the staff time spent cleaning. A slightly more expensive but durable chair often works out cheaper within a few years.

The best of both: metal frame with upholstered seat

For most venues, the most balanced solution is a metal frame combined with an upholstered seat and, where needed, an upholstered back. You get the strength and easy care of metal together with the comfort of upholstery. This combination makes most sense for:

  • Restaurants where guests typically stay longer than an hour
  • Hotel restaurants and cafés that must look smart and survive heavy use
  • Chains that want seating to match their brand colours and fabrics

Common questions

Are metal or wooden chairs better for a restaurant?

For heavy use, metal chairs are more durable, easier to clean and often stackable. Wood looks warmer but needs regular maintenance of its joints and varnish.

What fabric should I choose for upholstered restaurant chairs?

Choose a fabric rated at least 30,000 Martindale rubs, ideally wipe-clean fabric or faux leather. For very busy areas, 50,000 rubs or more is recommended.

Which chair material is best for outdoor use?

Metal chairs with an outdoor-grade coating are the most practical choice for terraces. Standard upholstery and most wood species deteriorate quickly in sun and rain.
