What is powder coating?
What is powder coating? In short, it is a solvent-free dry powder that is electrically charged, sprayed onto metal and then cured in an oven until it forms a hard, continuous film. It is the most widely used finish in metal chair manufacturing. As a manufacturer producing chairs, armchairs and bar stools in our own facility in Istanbul, we explain why powder coating is preferred for hospitality furniture and how to keep it looking good.
How electrostatic powder coating is applied
The process has three main steps. First, the steel frame is cleaned of oil, rust and dirt by sandblasting or chemical pretreatment, which is essential for adhesion. Next, an electrostatic gun charges the powder and sprays it onto the grounded frame. Because opposite charges attract, the powder wraps evenly around bends and weld areas. Finally, the frame goes into a curing oven, where the powder melts, flows and hardens into a smooth, tough layer.
Durability and benefits for chairs
Powder coat usually forms a thicker, more even layer than liquid paint, giving better resistance to knocks, scratches and wear. In cafés and restaurants, where chairs are dragged, stacked and wiped every day, the difference shows quickly. Because it contains no solvents, it also releases fewer volatile compounds during application.
| Property | Powder coating | Liquid paint |
|---|---|---|
| Film thickness | Thicker and even | Thinner, can run |
| Scratch and impact resistance | High | Medium |
| Solvents | None | Usually present |
| Drying | Oven cured | Air dried |
| Colours and textures | Wide (RAL, matt, gloss, textured) | Wide |
You can judge coating quality with a few simple checks. The colour and texture should be uniform, with no bare or thin spots around welds, inside corners or at the leg ends. Light fingernail pressure should leave no mark, and there should be no blistering or flaking along edges. A quick look at a sample before ordering tells you a lot.
RAL colours and surface finishes
Powder coatings are usually specified by RAL colour codes. Alongside classic black, anthracite, white and beige, custom frame colours can be applied for projects. Matt, satin, gloss and textured finishes each create a different mood, and textured surfaces hide minor scuffs better. If you need a specific frame colour, simply share the RAL code with the manufacturer.
Indoor vs outdoor powder coating
Not every powder is suitable outdoors. Indoor-grade powders can fade or chalk in direct sunlight. For terraces, gardens and balconies, choose a UV-resistant outdoor-grade powder. Outside, thorough surface preparation matters as much as the powder itself in delaying corrosion. Always tell the supplier where the chairs will be used.
Caring for powder-coated chairs
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth and mild soapy water.
- Avoid abrasive pads, thinners and harsh chemicals.
- Dry outdoor chairs after rain and cover them in winter.
- Touch up deep scratches with matching repair paint.
- Check floor glides regularly; worn glides wear through the coating.

Common questions
How long does powder coating last on chairs?
It depends on surface preparation, powder type, how heavily the chairs are used and how they are cared for. A well-applied coating can last many years with regular care.
Can powder-coated chairs be used outdoors?
Yes, provided a UV-resistant outdoor-grade powder and good pretreatment are used. Always state the intended use when ordering.
Can I choose any RAL colour?
Custom powder coat colours can be applied for projects. Share the RAL code and quantity with the manufacturer to request a quote.
